Open the Settings menu of the phone.
Tap on Wi-Fi & Internet/Wireless & networks / Network settings page
Tap on VPN.
Tap on the plus sign / (+) at the top right corner.
Enter the necessary information like the server address, username, and password. This info will be provided to you by the network administrator.
A VPN encrypts the user's data, so even if it was somehow intercepted, it would be almost impossible to decipher. Typically when using a VPN, at least in the case of purchasable software VPNs, they come with built in firewalls and malware detectors that also help with protecting the user's data. They also tend to come with phishing and spam detection
